Tennis star Coco Gauff on Thursday said the Olympics were an opportunity for Americans to "come together" during a turbulent presidential race back home, as she prepares to carry the US flag at the opening ceremony in Paris. 

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on Thursday withdrew from the Olympic Games tennis tournament, joining men's world number one Jannik Sinner in skipping the event.  The 25-year-old Russian-born Kazakh was down to face Romania's Jaqueline Cristian in the first round of the singles. 

Another great tennis star will end her professional career at these Olympic Games. Germany's Angelique Kerber, 36, announced her retirement in a message on Instagram and later confirmed it at the tournament draw.

British tennis player Andy Murray has opted out of the singles tournament at the Olympics due to back issues. He will partner with compatriot Dan Evans in what will be his final competition as a professional. Murray is the only player to have won two singles gold medals in Olympic history.

The tennis competition at the Paris Olympics has lost two of its hopefuls, the Italian Jannik Sinner and the Danish Holger Rune. In both cases it has been for health reasons: Sinner for tonsillitis and Rune for an injury to the thumb. The Olympic Tennis Games are held at the legendary Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday, the day after the opening ceremony.
