Hosts Chile suffered an agonising quarter-final exit from the Women's World Championship of Rink Hockey as an own goal in the golden goal period saw them lose to France.

A home crowd of 1,600 fans at the Play Brava venue in Iquique had been in buoyant mood when Chile went 2-0 up in the first half thanks to a pair of goals from Francisca Donoso.

France reduced the arrears before the break as Vanessa Daribo struck, and Camille Renier then pounced on a loose ball in the second half to level the match five minutes from time.

That necessitated golden goal overtime, and France progressed with a 3-2 win when Donoso this time converted at the wrong end.

A second quarter-final was decided by the golden goal as Portugal ousted Germany 5-4.

The Portuguese were seemingly in cruise control as they went in at the break 4-0 ahead, but Germany turned the tables and remarkably drew level in the second half.

The comeback could not be completed, however, as Marlene Sousa bagged the all-important golden goal for Portugal.

Two other quarter-finals were won in more routine fashion as Spain beat Italy 4-0 and reigning champions Argentina came past Colombia 5-0.

In the semi-finals tomorrow, Portugal will meet France with Argentina playing Spain.
