Three-time winner Ramy Ashour overcame a stern third round test to defeat England’s Daryl Selby and advance to the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Men’s World Championship quarter-finals at the Wadi Degla Club in Cairo.

The Egyptian had been yet to drop a game at the Championships but Selby ensured that would change after he bounced back from losing the opening game 11-6 to win the second 11-8.

The closing stages of the game had seen Selby win six consecutive points only for the momentum to shift once more as Ashour took control of the contest in the third and fourth games.

He eventually secured an 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6 victory to seal his place in the quarter-final stage of the competition.

"I think after the first game I wanted to win and that was a mistake," Ashour said.

"I should just stick to playing right, I got excited and then got hard on myself.

"He really came out fighting in the second game, and then in the third I got really mad at myself.

"I just wanted to play the right way, the way I was playing in the first game and I did get back to playing the right way again."

Ashour is now due to face the challenge of fellow Egyptian Fares Dessouky, who came through a thrilling five game match against Malaysia’s Nafiizwan Adnan.

The home favourite held a game advantage on two occasions but was instantly pegged back by his opponent.

Dessouky held his nerve, though, to complete a 13-11, 6-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6 victory.

Defending champion Gregory Gaultier enjoyed a straightforward third round match, with the Frenchman storming to an 11-8, 11-2, 11-6 win over Hong Kong’s Tsz Fung Yip.

He is now scheduled to face Tarek Momen, winner of an all-Egyptian match against Marwan El Shorbagy 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3.
