The Palau National Olympic Committee have discussed their approach for major upcoming Games, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The discussions took place at their General Assembly, where it was confirmed that Frank Kyota would continue to serve as the organisation’s President until 2020, having done so since 2004.

Temmy Shmull and Laura Mangham were confirmed as the organisation’s vice-president and secretary respectively, while Frida Delmau will serve as the treasurer.

Ernestine Rengiil, Alonz Moses, and Hila Asanuma were also confirmed as Board members of the organisation.

A report was provided regarding the country’s performance at the Rio 2016 Olympics Games, where they were represented by five athletes, all of which received invitations from their sport’s governing bodies.

Rodman Teltull competed in athletics, while Marina Toribiong and Florian Skilang Temengil represented Palau in canoeing and wrestling respectively.

Swimmers Shawn Dingilius-Wallace and Dirngulbai Misech also competed at the Games, with none of the athletes progressing to the latter stages of their events.

The Assembly heard reports related to the country’s future involvement at the 2018 Micronesian Games, as well as the Pacific Games and Mini Games.

Preparations for Tokyo 2020 were also on the agenda, along with proposals for activities in the forthcoming year.

The national federations for baseball, canoeing, tennis, softball, swimming, basketball and athletics were all present.

They were joined by weightlifting, wrestling, table tennis, triathlon, football, archery, volleyball and judo.

The National Olympic Committee’s Medical, Athletes and Education Commissions were among those to present at the meeting.

Each Commission outlined their activities related to sports overall planning and development, as well as highlighting opportunities for improvements.

A workshop with the sports federations present saw the proposal of events for 2017 come under assessment, along with the calendar of events, financial outlook, facilities assessment and the sports support mechanism in the country.
