A AUD$3 million (£1.7 million/$2.5 million/€2 million) makeover of Brisbane's biggest bus station is due to be completed in time for this year's Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, local officials have promised.

Work began last May on Queen Street's bus station last May, the  first major refurbishment since it opened in the city's central business district in 1988.

Shooting and track cycling events are both due to be held in Brisbane, located nearly 80 kilometres from the Gold Coast.

Brisbane is also expected to be an important hub for spectators travelling from all over Australia to attend the Games.

The work includes upgrading the ceiling, floor and wall tiles and wall panels.

The refurbishment, carried out by James Trowse Constructions, will also upgrade seating, handrails and lighting to ensure the station meets disability compliance.

The bus station is underneath The Myer Centre and Queen Street Mall.

At the time it opened, it was the largest underground diesel bus station in the world.

The timeline for the completion of the upgrade said "early 2018" but the Transport and Main Roads has now confirmed it expected the work to be finished by the end of March, before the start of the Commonwealth Games on April 4.
