Queensland Rail are reportedly set to alter the timetable of weekend train services in the south-east of the state to free up drivers to meet demands during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

It has been claimed that services across the Queensland Rail network will shift from a half-hour basis to every hour.

The Gold Coast line is expected to run on an accelerated service, with trains due to arrive every 15 minutes into the city throughout the duration of April's Games.

The public transport timetable for Gold Coast 2018 is set to be announced tomorrow.

Queensland Rail chief executive Nick Easy has admitted adjustments may be made to meet demand during the Games.

"Queensland Rail has been working closely with The Department of Transport and Main Roads to deliver an integrated public transport plan for south-east Queensland," Easy told the Australian Associated Press.

"This will encompass all modes of transport to support travel to and from the Games, and for other customers across South East Queensland during Games time.

"The scale of this major international event, which coincides with school holidays, will bring more than 620,000 visitors to the Gold Coast and generate more than six million extra trips on our transport network.

"We've always said there would need to be some adjustments to other parts of the rail network as we increase services on the Gold Coast line to meet this unprecedented demand."

A shortage of train drivers has proved an ongoing issue in Queensland, with concerns having ultimately led to Stirling Hinchliffe departing as Transport and Commonwealth Games Minister last year.

It came after a scathing report into transport with dozens of trains cancelled due to mismanagement and a shortage of drivers.

Hinchliffe opted to fall on his sword despite not being directly blamed.

Transport has been an area which organisers have sought to reassure the public before the Games, although they have consistently urged them to plan their journeys in advance.

In December, Queensland Rail announced that three new trains had begun passenger services.

The trains boast a total of six carriages and will have a capacity of 964 people, with 454 seated and 510 standing.

One train runs on the Gold Coast line, providing a connection between the coastal city and Brisbane.

Another has been used on the airport line, with the third train held in reserve.

The New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) trains had initially been expected to run from mid-2016, but a series of technical issues delayed their use.

There were doubts about how many of the NGR trains would be used for the Games, but following their successful introduction, a further two began running services last month on the Gold Coast and airport lines respectively.

"This is another positive step in the roll-out of the NGR programme and delivering a modern, world-class rail network for South East Queensland, including in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in April," Easy said.

"We expect to continue to deploy further NGR trains in the coming months as further trains are deemed ready for service after completing comprehensive testing and safety assessments.

"Following the Commonwealth Games, and as more trains are deemed ready for service, the fleet will gradually be deployed across the entire South East Queensland network."

Testing on stage two of the Gold Coast Light Rail, a separate project which will provide a tram service to connect with the heavy rail service at Helensvale, began in September.

The 7.3 kilometre light rail extension between Gold Coast University Hospital and Helensvale station began running passenger services last month.

More than 100,000 trips have reportedly been made on the extension so far, while it was announced a further three trams will be added to service during the Games to meet demands.

Gold Coast 2018 will open on April 4.
