Hosts Italy won the women's title as junior team épée action took centre stage at the Junior and Cadets World Fencing Championships in Verona.

Thirty-four nations took part in the women's event in all but nobody could match the home team at the Cattolica Center.

They defeated Romania in the gold medal contest, 45-31.

Bronze went to Russia who saw off Ukraine 45-27 for third place.

In the men's event, Hungary took the gold medal in the 42-team tournament as they edged France 45-42 in the final.

Italy added another medal to the home tally as they took bronze, defeating Israel 45-30.

This meant that Davide Di Veroli has now won a medal of every colour in Verona after taking silver in the cadet men's épée and gold in the junior men's épée.

More than 1,250 young athletes have converged for the International Fencing Federation event.

Competition will continue tomorrow with men's and women's individual competitions in junior sabre.
