Japan’s Takuto Otoguro overcame home favourite Bajrang Bajrang in a repeat of the 2018 World Championship final to clinch gold at the Asian Wrestling Championships in New Delhi.

Otoguro was crowned as Japan’s youngest freestyle world champion two years ago in Budapest, with his 16-9 win over Bajrang voted as United World Wrestling’s match of the year.

Neither wrestler made it back to the World Championship final last year, leaving the Asian continental event as their first meeting since the contest.

Otoguro denied the Indian wrestler in another high-profile men’s 65 kilogram freestyle final, as the 21-year-old secured a 10-2 victory to top the podium.

Iran’s Amirhossein Maghsoudi won the opening bronze-medal match 2-0 against Uzbekistan’s Abbos Rakhmonov, while Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov won 4-1 in his bout with Nyamdorj Battulga of Mongolia.

India had seen four of their wrestlers advance to finals, but the hosts were repeatedly denied victory.

Iran’s Mojtaba Goleij beat India’s Satywart Kadian 10-0 in the 97kg final, after a dominant display.

Alisher Yergali of Kazakhstan beat Magomed Musaev of Kyrgyzstan 11-5 in the opening bronze-medal bout, before Tajikistan’s Rustam Iskandari earned a victory by fall over Jordan’s Zaid Husein Mohamad Haroun Shishani.

India’s Baliyan Gourav went close to winning gold in front of a home crowd at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Gourav was ultimately denied victory in the 79kg event, as he fell to a 7-5 defeat to Kyrgyzstan’s Arsalan Budazhapov.

Iran’s Ali Bakhtiar Savadkouhi and Japan’s Shinkichi Okui won bronze medals in the division.

Savadkouhi won 5-0 against Kazakhstan’s Galymzhan Usserbayev, while Okui beat Mongolia’s Batzul Damjin 4-3.

It was fourth time lucky for the host nation as India’s wait for a freestyle title was ended by Ravi Kumar.

Kumar recorded a 10-0 win over Tajikistan’s Hikmatullo Vohidov in the men’s 57kg gold medal bout.

Japan’s Yuki Takahashi won 14-5 against Kazakhstan’s Nurislam Sanayev in the first bronze-medal contest, before Kyrgyzstan’s Bekbolot Myrzanazar overcame Uzbekistan’s Sardor Ruzimov 7-0.

Uzbekistan’s Ilyas Bekbulatov won the only final not to feature an Indian wrestler.

Bekbulatov battled to a 10-6 win over Iran’s Amirhossein Hosseini in the 70kg final.

Kyrgyzstan’s Islambek Orozbekov was awarded the first bronze after Mongolia’s Temuulen Enkhtuya was forced to withdraw from their bout due to injury.

Kazakhstan’s Meirzhan Ashirov eased to an 11-1 win over India’s Naveen Naveen in the final medal contest.

The final five freestyle titles will take place tomorrow as the Championships conclude.
