Upgrades and new regular lighting patterns are being introduced at Tokyo Skytree as the countdown to the Olympic and Paralympic Games steps up.

The broadcasting and observation tower is the tallest structure in Japan and features three different patterns called Iki, Miyabi and Nobori.

Tokyo Skytree say lighting systems have been upgraded since May 16, with an increased number of lights introduced at the middle and top of the structure.

The project to upgrade the lights was given the title “Tokyo Skytree Power-Up Lighting to Make Tokyo Much Brighter in 2020”.

Antenna equipment was installed to be illuminated in full colour, while also making it possible to continuously light up the middle to higher part of the tower body.

It is hoped the improvements attract more foreign visitors.

Tobu Tower Skytree, who operate the tower, say their regular lighting patterns are now set to be redesigned.

“As Tokyo Skytree has increasingly drawn domestic and international attention as the symbol of Tokyo and Japan, the tower decorates the night view of Tokyo so that you can find the bright top of the gain tower when viewed from a distance and the various dynamic effects when seen closely,” a spokesman for Tobu Tower Skytree said.

“Enjoy the lighting with different looks as you come closer to Tokyo Skytree town.

“The tower will also be illuminated with new lighting effects between the times of midnight and 6am the following morning.

“We hope that the brilliance and twinkling like a birthstone-coloured star whose light reaches far distances will be a light of hope for the wishes and prayers of many people.”

The redesigns are aimed at adding extra effects, which is hoped will introduce a brighter and more dynamic tower during 2020.

The new designs will be made possible using 2,362 lighting fixtures.
