The Malaysian Government has confirmed shot putter Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli will not be given a cash bonus after he was stripped of the gold medal he won at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Zolkefli claimed gold in the men's F20 shot put after he threw a world record of 17.94 metres but was later disqualified for arriving at the call room three minutes after his allotted time.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu denied claims Zolkefli not receiving the MYR1 million (£179,000/$241,000/€209,000) cash prize was punishment for his disqualification.

Azumu suggested, however, that Zolkefli could be rewarded through other incentives in the country.

Ukraine successfully appealed the result following Zolkefli's late arrival, handing the Paralympic title to Ukrainian shot putter Maksym Koval.

The decision was upheld following an investigation by World Para Athletics, which stated there is no evidence that Ziyad - who won T20 shot put gold at Rio 2016 - arrived at the call room at the appointed time.

Stripping the Malaysian of his Paralympic gold medal sparked controversy and led to the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee receiving online abuse.

Malaysian Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin was among those to vent their dismay after the event, describing the decision as "shameful" and an "absolute disgrace".
