María José Alcalá is the new President of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) after winning a historic election which made her the first woman to lead the organisation.

Having won 87 votes to Norma Olivia González Guerrero's 46, she was confirmed to the role for the period ending 2024.

The election took place at the 2021 Ordinary General Assembly of Associates, held within the Mexican Olympic Sports Center.

"I have always characterised myself as an honest and committed person, that is why I have managed to stand out in my personal and sporting life with achievements and always with transparency," said José Alcalá following her victory.

"I will always give the Mexican Olympic Committee enough time and I will also give all the permanent members and the National Federations enough time for when they need me."

Outgoing COM President Carlos Padilla Becerra advised the new head "to defend the integrity, autonomy and honour of the COM that must prevail before everything and before any adverse circumstance".

Padilla Becerra was the President from 2012 to 2021.

International Olympic Committee representative and honorary member of the COM, Olegario Vázquez, congratulated José Alcalá on her win as she becomes the 10th President of the COM since 1923.

At the elections, Daniel Aceves Villagrán was named the first vice-president and Jaime Cadaval Baeza the second vice-president.

Mario García de la Torre was named the secretary general until 2024 with assistant secretary as Martha Hernández Sánchez and Jorge Alfonso Peña Soberanis as treasurer.
