Cuba produced a divine display in the mixed team diving competition at the Junior Pan American Games here in Cali to claim the first gold medal of the event at the Hernando Botero O'Byrne Swimming Pools.

The team were impressive across all three platforms - the one-metre, 3m and 10m, as well as in the individual and synchronised dives.

The consistency meant that they finished with a score of 471.20 after five rounds to stand atop the podium.

Cuba were led by the prodigious Anisley García.

The 19-year-old featured in every round and did not receive a score lower than seven from any of the seven judges.

It was from round three that García was able to distance herself from the chasing pack.

Dives in rounds one and two had a difficulty limit of two meaning she would not benefit from executing advanced routines.

However, the restriction was then removed and she was able to excel, receiving scores of 7.5 and eight from the judges.

Despite what appeared to be a completely dominant performance, Cuba only won by a margin of 2.85 points.

Mexico had to settle for the silver medal after securing an overall score of 468.35.

It was their third dive that denied them as they received an average score of 4.5.

The United States rounded out the top three on 417.1 points in an impressive display bookended by solid synchronised performances to beat fourth-placed Canada to the podium.

Panam Sports President Neven Ilic was joined by Cali 2021 Organising Committee President Baltazar Medina to hand out the prizes at the medal ceremony.

A total of four athletes took to the podium for each country.

Despite being medallists, one member of each team was left empty handed as only three medals of each colour were presented by Ilic.
