Marte Olsbu Røiseland of Norway extended her lead at the top of the overall women's standings with victory in the women's sprint at the Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof.

The multiple world champion and two-time Olympic silver medallist finished the 7.5 kilometres course in 23min 30.1sec.

While Røiseland powered to victory, there was a dramatic battle for second place which resulted in a tie between Hanna Sola of Belarus and France's Julia Simon.

Sola appeared to be on course to take the silver medal before Simon fought back, gaining 6.7sec on her rival and crossing the line at the same time as the Belarusian.

Both athletes ended 7.1 down on the triumphant Norwegian, who claimed her fourth win of the season.

Røiseland has 477 points in the race for the women's overall title.

She leads nearest challenger Elvira Öberg of Sweden by 64 points.

"It was tough out there," said Røiseland.

"The wind was blowing and snowing; it was tough conditions.

"On the shooting range, sometimes it was blowing up and sometimes nothing so you just had to go for it when it was not blowing.

"I am really happy.

"I had one mistake and I think that is a good result in Oberhof, with my shooting and ski time today."

Russian veteran Alexander Loginov, who served a two-year drugs ban earlier in his career, won the men's 10km sprint in 27:00.8.

Loginov earned his first podium of the campaign, and just his fourth World Cup victory, after finishing 6.5 clear of Emilien Jacquelin of France in second.

Sturla Holm Lægreid of Norway was third, 15.1 behind Loginov.

Jacquelin remains the overall leader on 425 points and is 24 clear of compatriot Quentin Fillon Maillet, who has 401.

The event in Oberhof continues tomorrow with the single mixed relay and mixed relay races.
