Former captain of the men's Zimbabwe cricket team Brendan Taylor has claimed he was blackmailed into accepting a bribe to spot-fix matches after he was filmed taking cocaine, but says he never went through with it.

He said he was threatened by an Indian businessman in October 2019, but also took $15,000 (£11,100/€13,300).

Taylor also stated the International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to hand out a "multi-year ban" on his international career.

The 35-year-old said he travelled to India to discuss a potential Twenty20 league in his home country and on the final night, he was offered the illegal substance.

He then claims he was blackmailed when the men he was in conversation with showed him a video of the incident, threatening to make it public if he did not participate in match-fixing.

Taylor said he was given $15,000 as a deposit and would have been given another $20,000 (£14,600/€17,500) for finishing the job.

He said he only took the money as he believed it was the only way to get out of India.

"I would like to place on record that I have never been involved in any form of match-fixing," said Taylor, who retired from international cricket last year after a one-day international match with Ireland in September.

"I may be many things, but I am not a cheat.

"My love for the beautiful game of cricket far outweighs and surpasses any threats which could be thrown my way."

The ICC is continuing its investigation.

Taylor has entered a rehabilitation centre today to treat his substance addiction, stating the last two years had been "hell" and had "severely impacted" his mental and physical health.

"It is from absolutely rock bottom that I am trying to climb out of this mess I made," he added.

"I have let a substance take control of me and impair my vision, my morals and my values and it is time I prioritise what really matters."

Taylor took four months to report the incident to the ICC.

The organisation's anti-corruption code bans players accepting bribes to influence a match and says all approaches must be reported "without unnecessary delay".

According to BBC Sport, Taylor has accepted the charges and has been offered sanctions, but no final decision has been made yet.
