Vasyl Kovalchuk, who won gold medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympics, topped the standings in the R5 mixed 10 metres air rifle prone SH2 event at the World Shooting Para Sport Championships in Abu Dhabi.

The Ukrainian won both of his Paralympic titles in the event and almost made it three consecutive triumphs at Tokyo 2020, but lost in the final.

Kovalchuk made no mistake today at the Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club.

He registered a score of 254.6 to defeat Indonesia's Bolo Triyanto by a slim margin of 1.7 points in the final.

Slovenia's Franček Gorazd Tiršek, who took Paralympic bronze in Japan, finished in the same position after accumulating 232.6.

There was one other title on offer today and former Paralympic 10m air pistol SH1 champion Olivera Nakovska-Bikova snapped it up.

This time around, the Macedonian triumphed in the P4 mixed 50m pistol SH1 event thanks to a final tally of 216.5.

Her pinpoint accuracy was significant as it prevented Oleksii Denysiuk from securing another gold medal for Ukraine.

The two-time Paralympic bronze medallist scored 215.3.

Following the pair was Turkey's Cevat Karagöl, who put 193.5 on the board to claim bronze.

Iran's Mohammadreza Mirshafiei sealed a Paris 2024 quota spot after coming fourth with a score of 176.1.

The World Championships is set to conclude on Thursday (November 17).
