The champions have been crowned at the Boccia World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, with athletes from eight different countries topping the podium in the men’s and women’s events across the BC1-BC4 categories.

Competition took place at the Carioca Arena in the Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca, which hosted boccia competition during the Rio 2016 Paralympics. 

There was home success in the women’s BC1 event, with Andreza Vitoria De Oliveira claiming gold.

De Oliveira beat Dora Basic of Croatia 3-1 in the final, with the bronze medal going the way of Yuriko Fujii of Japan.

In the men’s BC1 category gold went to Thailand’s Witsanu Huadpradit, after he overcame Britain’s David Smith 5-0.

The podium for the category was completed by Andre Ramos of Portugal.

In the women’s BC2 category Britain’s Claire Taggart claimed gold, overcoming Rebeca Duarte of El Salvador 7-1.

Soyeong Jeong of South Korea earned the bronze medal in the classification.

Luis Cristaldo of Argentina took victory in the men’s BC2 classification, courtesy of a 6-2 win over Takayuki Hirose of Japan.

Third place went to Watcharaphon Vongsa of Thailand as he took bronze.

In the women’s BC3 classification there was another country on top of the podium, as Ana Costa of Portugal took gold with a 6-2 win over Jamieson Leeson of Australia.

Yuen Kei Ho of Hong Kong claimed bronze in the category.

Daniel Michel of Australia took top spot in the men’s BC3 discipline, with a 5-1 win over Portugal’s José Gonçalves.

The podium was completed by Adam Peska of the Czech Republic.

Michaela Balcova of Slovakia took gold in the women’s BC4 classification, courtesy of a 4-2 win over Leidy Chica Chica of Colombia.

The podium in the classification was completed by Yuen Cheung of Hong Kong.

The men’s BC4 category went to Shunsuke Uchida of Japan, who completed a comprehensive 7-0 victory over Euclides Grisales of Colombia.

Pornchok Larpyen of Thailand completed the podium in the classification.

In the pairs competitions, the BC3 category was won by Australia, who overcame Thailand 5-2, with bronze going to Hong Kong after a 7-0 victory over Japan.

In the pairs BC4 discipline, Colombia narrowly took gold as they edged past Slovakia 4-3, with Canada taking the bronze thanks to a 3-1 triumph over Japan.

Finally in the BC1/2 team competition, South Korea took gold in another close final, beating Britain 6-5.

Third place went to Japan, as they defeated Argentina 8-3.
