The 2023 World Sambo Championships have been awarded to Armenia by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) after Egypt withdrew its interest due to "changed circumstances".

It was revealed after FIAS launched its 2023 calendar, with the Championships now scheduled to take place in Yerevan from November 10 to 12.

FIAS said it was impressed by the Armenians' hosting of the 2022 World Cadets, Youth and Junior Sambo Championships - with this factoring into its decision to award the sport's highest competition.

The World Beach Sambo Championships are still scheduled to take place in Dominican Republic on September 9 and 10; while the sport is on the programme for the World Combat Games in Saudi Arabia in October and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Thailand in late November.

The 2023 season is set to open at the Asian and Oceanian Beach Sambo Championships on February 24 and 25 in Bahrain, followed by the European Sambo Championships - as well as the youth categories equivalent - in Israel from April 19 to 23.
