Athletes who competed for the Isle of Man at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are among those shortlisted for the Isle of Man Sports Awards.

A total of 60 individuals across a range of sports have been named on the shortlist that was announced last month.

Cyclist Mark Cavendish and gymnast Tara Donnelly were named Manx sportsman and sportswoman of the year respectively in 2022.

Cavendish, who finished 44th in the men's road race at Birmingham 2022 is on the shortlist again along with fellow cyclist Matthew Bostock, who competed in the same race but failed to finish.

Middle-distance runner David Mullarkey, who competed in the 5,000 metres and 1500m races at Birmingham 2022, and javelin thrower Joe Harris, who placed 11th in the final, are also among the men's nominations, alongside swimmer Alex Bregazzi, who competed in multiple freestyle events.

Donnelly, who was the island's sole gymnast at Birmingham 2022, and placed 13th in the women's all-around final, is a contender for the women’s title.

She will face competition from cyclists Becky Storrie and Lizzie Holden, who finished sixth and fifth respectively in the women's time-trial, swimmer Laura Kinley, who competed in two breaststroke events, and middle-distance runner Sarah Astin, who finished 16th in the women's 5,000m.

"The Island has once again shone in the world of sport, despite the ongoing uncertainty going on around it," said Sarah Corlett, from Isle of Man Sport.

"Despite our small size, year after year we produce athletes competing at all levels up to world standard and representing our Island with pride and professionalism."

The winners are set to be announced at a ceremony at Villa Marina in Douglas on March 30.

The Isle of Man sent a 34 strong team to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, but did not win any medals.
