French movie studio EuropaCorp is seeking "eviction compensation" from the owners of the Cité du Cinéma, with the facility in Paris set to be unavailable from November this year for its usage as an athletes' canteen during the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Saint-Denis-based premises is located close to the under construction Olympic and Paralympic Village, and EuropaCorp, which was co-founded by film director and producer Luc Besson, is its main tenant.

EuropaCorp is seeking more than €14 million (£12.5 million/$15 million) for itself and nine sub-tenant companies from Cité du Cinéma owner Nef Lumière, and is concerned the future of occupants while the venue is unavailable.

"The very existence of each of the occupants of the Cité du Cinéma is in danger and will deal a mortal blow to one of the jewels of the French audiovisual ecosystem," EuropaCorp lawyer Arnaud de Senilhes said, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"Never in such a short time will the occupants be able to find premises to accommodate them for more than a year except by signing new commercial leases committing them for at least three years, which will make it impossible for them to return to the premises of the Cité du Cinéma."

AFP reported that Colliers Global Investors France, the manager of the company Nef Lumière, claimed that discussions were ongoing with EuropaCorp with the "aim of finding an amicable agreement for early release".

But, regarding the compensation claim, it "did not wish to comment while the negotiation with EuropaCorp is in progress".

Besson was commissioned to produce the promotional movie for Paris' unsuccessful bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which was awarded to London.

He has directed and produced films including Subway, The Big Blue and Nikita.

The Village is set to house 14,500 athletes and their staff during the Olympic Games and 9,000 during the Paralympics.

Up to 60,000 meals per day are expected to be served, and there are plans to convert the neighbourhood into residential housing after the end of the Games.

The Olympic Games are scheduled for July 26 to August 11 next year, followed by the Paralympics from August 28 to September 8.
