World Athletics has encouraged people to get active to mark Olympic Day which is being celebrated today.

The governing body has promoted the International Olympic Committee initiative which is running under the theme "Let's Move".

The occasion aims to inspire people around the world to make time for daily physical activity which is in line with World Athletics' long-term strategy of using its sport to create a healthier world.

Announced in April, World Athletics encouraged children around the world to "Move, Play, Explore" in celebration of Kids' Athletics Day.

The annual event then took place on May 7 and was entirely dedicated to celebrating children being active by participating in athletics.

In total, 106 member federations participated with more than 300,000 children taking part.

Activities included a programme at the Rimi Riga Marathon in Latvia and an event in the American city of Atlanta where sprinters Noah and Josephus Lyles met with children and spoke to them about the importance of being active for their development and wellbeing.

Olympic Day was first held in 1948 and has evolved into a global celebration.

For this year's edition, the IOC's Let's Move initiative encourages people to do 30 minutes of exercise in their day by sending out a digital invitation.

Let's Move events are being held in 150 countries across five continents to celebrate Olympic Day - marked every year on June 23 in honour of Pierre de Coubertin who founded the Olympic Movement on this day in 1894 in Paris.

Around five million people, and an additional seven million schoolchildren, are due to be involved.

Participants will also have the chance to work out alongside athletes such as American sprinter Allyson Felix, Spanish basketball star Pau Gasol and Indian badminton player PV Sindhu.
