Long Beach is set to host men’s and women’s Olympic water polo competition during the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and played host to three days of high-quality women’s water polo action, featuring eight of the world’s top nations.

In a see-saw contest both teams enjoyed 8-3 scoring runs, with the US taking the advantage in the second quarter before the Dutch responded to level the contest in the final two minutes.

A conversion from Rachel Fattal following a US timeout proved the crucial score, with Amanda Longan making a crucial save inside the final 20 seconds to block a shot from Dutch captain Sabrina van der Sloot to preserve the US advantage.

Longan made 15 saves throughout the match and was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, while US captain Maggie Steffens scored three goals.

In the bronze-medal match, World League champions Spain won a second World Cup bronze, defeating Hungary 18-15.

With the scores level in the second period, Spain scored three unanswered goals and managed the rest of the contest to complete the victory.

Anni Espar was named the best player in the water, scoring five goals for Spain, and was later awarded the title of the tournament’s most valuable player.

There was late drama in the classification match for fifth and sixth place, with Greece edging past Italy 10-9 thanks to a goal with two seconds remaining by Eleni Xenaki.

There was also only a single point separating the teams in the classification match for seventh and eighth, with Israel overcoming New Zealand 12-11.

Israel’s winner came from Veronika Kordonskaia with 46 seconds remaining, as Israel claimed a historic first victory at a World Cup Finals series.
