Four taekwondo athletes from Bhutan are training in South Korea as they step up preparations for this year’s Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.

The athletes, under the guidance of coach Bikash Rai, arrived at the Kyung-Il University in South Korea following an invitation by the Korea Taekwondo Association.

It is set to be a first appearance at the Asian Games for all four athletes, including Tshering Yangchen and Dorji Khando, both from Chukha, who have previous senior level experience.

The line-up is completed by Nima Wangdi and Sagar Rai, who both have less international experience.

The team’s coach Bikash Rai believes the athletes physical and mental abilities will improve from the ongoing practice in South Korea.

"I am working to inculcate the potentials {of speed, fitness, endurance and agility}," said Bikash Rai, as reported by Kuensel Online.

"They would improve under the guidance and coaching of qualified coaches in Korea.

"Two of my athletes have commendable international experience. I hope they will do well. We continue to inspire and guide them."

The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, which have twice been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, are scheduled to take place from September 23 to October 8.

Bhutan has never won a medal at the Asian Games.

The country sent eight taekwondo athletes to the 2018 Asian Games, all of whom competed in the kyorugi events.
