China claimed double gold on the first day of individual apparatus finals at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, while American Simone Biles was forced to settle for silver in the women’s vault.

China’s first victory came in the women’s uneven bars with Qiu Qiyuan, who won gold in the Asian Championships in the discipline earlier this year, took a first world title.

Qiyuan, who topped individual qualifying on the uneven bars at the Antwerp Sportpaleis, took gold with a total of 15.100.

Silver went to Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour with 15.033, with American Shilese Jones completing the podium with 14.766.

Her compatriot Biles, who yesterday secured a record 21st World Championship gold by winning the individual all-around crown finished fifth with 14.200.

There was more success for China in the men’s rings, with gold going to reigning Olympic champion Liu Yang with 15.233.

Silver went to Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece with 15.066, with the podium completed by fellow Chinese gymnast You Hao on 14.833.

The women’s vault title went to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, with the Olympic champion triumphing with a score of 14.750.

Biles took silver with 14.549, having topped the qualification for this apparatus earlier in the Championships.

The podium was completed by South Korean Yeo Seojeong who took bronze after scoring 14.416.

Two more men’s titles were up for grabs on the first of two days of individual apparatus finals, with the men’s pommel horse crown successfully defended by Northern Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan.

McClenaghan took the title with 15.100 points, with silver going to Khoi Young of the United States with 14.966.

The podium was completed by Jordan’s Ahmad Abu Al Soud with 14.633, while the top qualifier on the apparatus Britain’s Max Whitlock finished fifth with a score of 14.300.

Finally, the men’s floor exercise title went to reigning Olympic champion in the discipline Artem Dolgopyat of Israel.

Dolgopyat topped the standings with 14.866, with the silver medal going to Kazuki Minami of Japan with 14.666.

The podium was completed by Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi with 14.600.

Five more apparatus titles are due to be decided on the final day tomorrow - the men’s vault, women’s balance beam, men’s parallel bars, women’s floor exercise and men’s horizontal bar.
