Brazil, Japan and Canada also booked their places in the French capital with only six berths available from the events in Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Xi'an.

World champions Italy were among the teams unable to qualify, meaning they will have to find another route to the Games next year.

The world number one Poles relinquished their world title by losing to the Italians in the final last year, but have added the Volleyball Nations League and European Championships since then.

They defeated Canada, Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Netherlands, hosts China and Mexico to win their qualifier at the Qujiang Sports Complex in Xi'an with a match to spare and bring their winning streak up to 24 matches.

Poland will compete at the Olympics for the 11th time after winning gold in Montreal in 1976.

Canada grabbed the second Paris 2024 spot available in Xi'an in dramatic circumstances as Belgium slipped up during the final round of matches.

All Belgium needed to do was defeat Bulgaria to qualify, but they lost 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13 to leave the door ajar for the Canadians.

The Canadians duly obliged with a 25-20, 25-21, 25-15 win over Mexico to finish as runners-up behind Poland.

Belgium slipped to fourth with Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallists Argentina also missing out in third spot.

"It's unbelievable," said Canada's head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo, who guided the country to a third consecutive Olympic appearance. 

"I'm just so happy for volleyball in Canada, and the history of what people have done for many years with this programme to now consistently be in the Olympics. 

"I would like to thank the players, not only the ones here in China, but also those that have given so much effort to this programme during the summer, as well as the coaching staff that have been part of the programme. 

"It's an unbelievable moment and being in the Olympics is huge, as it represents the country."

World number two side the US triumphed at Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo at an event which doubled up as the Volleyball World Cup.

They saw off Japan, Slovenia, Turkey, Serbia, Finland, Egypt and Tunisia to book their place at the Olympics for the 13th time and continue a quest for a fourth gold medal.

Both the US and Japan qualified with a game to spare, before the Americans beat the hosts 25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12 in a five-set thriller to finish the tournament and top the group.

"I think one of the hardest parts about this job is the intensity and focus on getting qualified for the Olympic Games," US head coach John Speraw said. 

"So in the back of your mind there is always that quest to make sure you have that opportunity at the end."

World number 10 outfit Germany will end a 12-year wait for an Olympic appearance after preventing the much-fancied Brazilians from winning their home qualifier at Maracanãzinho.

As well as beating the hosts, they saw off Italy, Cuba, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Iran and Qatar, and also went through with a game to play.

"I'm overwhelmed," said outside hitter Moritz Reicheirt.

"I don't think we realise what we just did. 

"The tournament went by in the blink of an eye and we played well and consistently in every match."

Brazil faced a crunch last match with Italy to go through as runners-up and obliged with a 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-11 victory in a thrilling clash in the same venue where they won their third Olympic gold at Rio 2016.

Only the top 24 teams in the International Volleyball Federation rankings, as of September 12 last year, were eligible to compete in Road to Paris qualifying events.

A further five places are still available at the Games, which are due to be decided through the world rankings on June 24 next year.

Teams from a continent without a qualified side will be given priority, with Africa the only team lacking a representative so far.

Egypt, Italy, Slovenia, Serbia and Argentina would all qualify as things stand.

Russia, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallists, will not compete in Paris as the International Olympic Committee has banned team sports from the country due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Olympic gold medallists France have automatically qualified as hosts.
