Russia’s Maria Tolokonina and Nikolai Kuzovlev were crowned winners at the inaugural Ice Climbing World Combined Championships at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

The International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) event saw climbers ranked on their performances in both the speed and lead disciplines.

Tolokonina, a multiple world champion and World Cup winner, had impressed in yesterday’s qualification on the wall placed outside the Luzhniki Stadium which hosted the 1980 Olympic Games and this year's FIFA World Cup final. 

The Russian athlete finished second in the women’s speed event in the morning session, Valeriia Bogdan repeating her first place in qualification.

Tolokonina emerged as the winner top athlete in the lead competition for the second consecutive day.

Her performance proved enough to secure the overall title, finishing ahead of her fellow Russian Bogdan.

An all-Russian podium was rounded off by Maryam Filippova.

Kuzovlev ensured double Russian gold by producing strong performances in the men’s speed and lead events.

He followed a second place finish in the speed discipline by becoming the first athlete to top the lead wall.

His fellow Russian Nikita Glazyrin, the youngest athlete in the competition at 17, secured the overall silver medal.

Iran’s Mohammadreza Safdarian prevented a clean sweep of Russian medals at the Championships by winning bronze.

The event was viewed as a curtain-raiser before the start of the World Championship and World Cup season, with only three rounds of the second tier European Tour taking place so far this term.

The World Cup season is due to begin in Cheongsong in South Korea on January 11.
